What is tea?
The expression herbal tea, or herb tea, describes any hot-water extract made from any plant or combination of plants apart from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. Some tea connoisseurs object to the use of the word “tea” to reference herbal teas, because herbal teas do not contain any legitimate tea. These people frequently advocate for the term infusion, or the use of the expression tisane. On the other hand, the word “herbal tea” is in widespread use, and we’ll use it here.
Herbal teas are diverse and span the full assortment of flavors and scents. There are those used chiefly as beverages two types of herbal teas, and those used for medicinal purposes. But, there is much overlap between both of these groups. Virtually all of the herbs consumed as beverages take health benefits, and the line between beverage and medicine can be blurry.
The most popular Kinds of teas:
Mint is one of the most well-known herbs for utilizing as a drink by itself, or for blending with other herbs. There are varieties of mint; the most are spearmint and peppermint. One other mint is apple mint, used in traditional Moroccan mint tea, and commonly grown in gardens throughout the world.
The lemon-scented herbs are another source of teas. The lemon-scented herbs are unrelated to lemon (or to each other), but they share certain aroma chemicals in common. These lemony chemicals include citral, which has been studied because of its potential.
Relaxing Herbs: Chamomile, Tulsi, and Others:
Chamomile is one of the most famous herbs, and tea is a favorite bedtime drink, as a result of its calming effects. Another relaxing herb, equally important, although less known in the west, is tulsi. Tulsi, also called basil, is a species of basil native to India, using a clove-like aroma. The two tulsi and chamomile have been shown to promote relaxation, and both herbs reveal evidence of being able to lower blood glucose, which can be significant in preventing or managing type 2 diabetes. Tulsi also reveals some evidence of being effective for treating stress, and with positive overall effects on the immune system.
These are just two of the herbs used to promote relaxation. Herbal teas are usually regarded as relaxing. Passionflower and lemon balm are a few of the numerous herbs used to treat stress or help people unwind.
Rooibos & Honeybush:
These plants equally create teas which are said to be similar to black tea in odor and flavor compared to any other herbs’ infusions. Rooibos specifically has been examined for its medicinal properties, such as its use. Honeybush has been studied but shows promise of properties. The two rooibos and honeybush are beginning to be produced in red as well as green varieties. Green rooibos and honeybush have a flavor and properties very similar to green tea, as they are made in a similar manner.
Other Herbal Teas:
The amount of herbal teas out there is virtually infinite. Leaves, roots, seeds, and even bark from trees and shrubs are used, both and in combinations, to generate teas.
